Charly Evon Simpson
Hunter College Playwriting MFA alumna Charly Evon Simpson is a playwright, educator, and TV writer based in Brooklyn. Her plays include Behind the Sheet, Jump, form of a girl unknown, and it’s not a trip it’s a journey. In TV, Simpson has worked as a writer on Showtime's American Rust and currently has an overall deal at HBO, where she has been a consulting producer on the second season of Industry, and a writer for several other limited series. Her works have been seen or developed with The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, PlayMakers Repertory Company, Chautauqua Theater Company, Salt Lake Acting Company, and many others. Simpson is a recipient of the Vineyard Theatre's Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, David Goldman Fund for New Plays, and the Dramatists Guild's Lanford Wilson Award.
Simpson chose Hunter College to work with the incredible faculty and continue teaching a diverse group of students. “I wanted the opportunity to focus and deepen my craft, to work with undergraduates in preparation for future teaching, and to stay in NYC and be involved with theater in the city,” she said. “This program allowed me to do all three of those things and more, while working with professors and fellow students I greatly admired. It pushed me in the ways I need to be pushed in order to grow as a playwright.”
Simpson has taught playwriting and storytelling to people of all ages. She has been an adjunct lecturer at Fordham University, SUNY Purchase, and Hunter College. She holds a B.A. from Brown University, and a master’s in Women’s Studies from the University of Oxford, New College. College.
