Garrett Zuercher
Actor, playwright, and filmmaker Garrett Zuercher earned his MFA in Playwriting at Hunter College in 2022. He identifies as a profoundly Deaf artist and a member of the LGBTQ community. “As a profoundly Deaf artist, it’s always a challenge to try and find the rare spaces where I feel like I fit in,” Zuercher said. “The Hunter Theatre Department welcomed me with open arms, and I honestly cannot think of a single thing I would change about my experience thus far. They go above and beyond to make sure all my needs are fulfilled. The faculty is full of brilliant and inspiring instructors who motivate and push me to become a better writer and I am honored to now be able to call them friends. As for my cohort, it’s no exaggeration to say that we are a tightly knit family and I could not love them more. When we are together, it is a source of pure joy and unbridled creative energy. I wish I could stay longer than these two short years and am so thankful to be among these amazing people in this incredible program.”
Zuercher is the founding Artistic Director of Deaf Broadway, a groundbreaking series that aims to provide full and complete American Sign Language (ASL) access to selections from the Broadway catalog—productions for the Deaf community, performed by the Deaf community. In 2023, he assistant directed, produced, and starred in Deaf Broadway's third production at Lincoln Center, Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company. Zuercher also appeared in Law & Order: Criminal Intent and the film Wonderstruck.
