Alex Gilvarry

Alex Gilvarry is the author of two novels, From the Memoirs of a Non-Enemy Combatant (2012) and Eastman Was Here (2017). Born and raised in Staten Island, Gilvarry is a graduate of the MFA in creative writing program at Hunter College, and was nominated for the PEN Open Book Award for his second novel. He is a winner of the Hornblower Award for First Fiction from the New York Society Library, the Best New Voice by Bookspan award, and selected by The New York Times as an Editor’s Choice. Gilvarry was a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 nominee, and has received fellowships from the Harry Ransom Center and the Norman Mailer Center. His essays and criticism have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, Boston Globe, NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and other publications. Currently he works as a professor of creative writing at Monmouth University.
