Liz Appel
New York-based playwright Liz Appel graduated from Hunter’s MFA program in Playwriting in 2021, where she was awarded a Roberts Foundation Fellowship. Originally from Toronto, Appel also holds an MA and an MPhil from Yale University. Upon finishing her degree, Appel described her experience at Hunter College as “a decade’s worth of learning in two years—I’m exhausted, but thrilled.”
“One of the things I love about the Hunter MFA in Playwriting is the small size of our cohort,” Appel said. “We all have different backgrounds, styles, and aims, which all makes for an energized and inspired environment. We're always learning from and supporting each other, and challenging ourselves to push harder. We have excellent workshop leaders and master classes, and the unparalleled support of our program director. It's been a time and place for me to hone my craft but also to take risks.”
Appel’s play Bells Like Hooves was featured in the 2022 Roundabout Underground Reading Series. Her short play Snow was produced at the Old Red Lion Theatre in London, Moonshine received a staged reading at the Cherry Lane, and her one-act play Remember is published in Blackbird. She has developed work at the Sewanee Writers' Conference, the Kennedy Center, the Banff Centre, the Flea Theater, and the Tank, and is a New Georges Affiliate Artist. She has been a 2022 Ucross Fellow, a 2022 Tofte Lake artist resident, and a 2021-2022 5th Floor Groundbreaker Grant recipient. Appel was a winner of the Henley Rose Playwright Competition for Women, and a 2023 “New Georges Jam” member as well as a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. Appel writes features and interviews playwrights and directors for Vogue.com.
