Ryan Ponder McNamara

Brooklyn-based artist Ryan McNamara is both a member of the Hunter College faculty and a graduate of the MFA program. He works in a multitude of media and methods including performance, installation, photography, drawing, and sculpture. Many of his works have a collaborative or participatory quality, incorporating elements of theater and dance into site, or situation-specific installations and events.

McNamara describes Hunter’s MFA program as integral to the development of his artistic practice. “The professors prompted me to question all aspects of my work, which is exactly what I needed,” he says. “I came out of the program a better artist with a richer appreciation of all forms of art."

His work has been featured at MoMA PS1, Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim New York, Museum of Modern Art, ICA Boston, the High Line, and included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He has taught at several universities and art schools, including the School of Visual Arts and New York University, and has served as a mentor for the Whitney Independent Study Program.
